October 2022 SSB Sprint
RESULTS
While sandwiched in between other major contest events in the Fall event, the October 2022 SSB Sprint still provided good but slightly below average participation in terms of logs received. But there were a good many other stations that joined in the on the air fun, but that did not submit their entry. Even so, there were 163 submitted entries that were usable in the results. The most popular category again was Low-Power with 92 entries. With the slightly lower participation only 11 stations managed to break the 10,000 score level this time. Every U.S. state, every Canadian province/territory except VY0 and ten 10 different NA countries were worked at least once. Fifteen stations worked 50 or more multipliers. But some of those states and Canadian multipliers were tough to work. The toughest were, with five or less contacts showing up in logs, AR, ND, NS, CT, NV and NB. K0EU and KW8N came the closest to obtaining that elusive “Worked All States” T-Shirt with 44 each. Two more had 43 and three others had 42. It has now been 6 years since anyone has accomplished that feat. We will try to be more effective in having reasonable efforts from every state and province/territory in the next event.
So which ones were the easiest? As you would expect, the states that showed up 400 or more times, in descending order CA, CO, WA, GA, OH, NY, TX, VA, TN. The easiest Canadian multipliers were ON, BC, SK (thank you again Sam), and AB. I do need to thank VY1CO, VE8GER, VY2LI, and VO2AC who made concerted efforts to put their rare multiplier on the air for at least some of the event. For NA countries, the easy ones were V3, KP2, XE and ZF.
Twenty meters was very productive for some. K6LL racked up 138 QSOs on that band. AE6Y had 82 and K7SS had 78 on twenty. But some shorter skip helped East and Midwest stations with KW8N, K4ZW and W9RE having the next most with 70 or more on twenty. Twenty meters didn’t hold up for Bill V31XX as it typically would have. He had just 54 QSOs on twenty meters. But, that just meant more time on 40 meters where Bill had far and away the most QSOs with 145 on that band. Overall, forty meters was the main band again with 52.2% of all the Sprint QSOs occurring on 40 meters. That means more QSOs were made on 40 meters than on 20 meters and 75 meters combined. No one seemed to dominate 75 meters as the top 20 highest QSO totals on that band only ranged from 66 to 51. QSOs on 75 meters have been a bit lower recently. It could be that since most of the 75 meter activity is below 3800 KHz, QSOs with General Class licensees is reduced. We might want to carefully provide some QSOs above 3800 KHz provided we are able to avoid QRMing some of the nets up there.
We continue to receive lots of favorable comments from newcomers to the Sprint who have a very fun time and are planning to operate in the next event. While a few hams find the format too confusing, many others enjoy the format because they are able to be called by many other stations once they finish working the station that they called. One reminder to reduce confusion is to use the protocol in the guidelines. Since stations are coming and going on a particular frequency, the rules require both callsigns in the both exchanges. To further make things clearer, the recommended protocol describes the order of the exchange. If someone is calling you (following the end of your previous QSO or in answer to your CQ) you would say: His call, then your callsign, your #, your name, and your s/p/c. This indicates that the QSO is not yet over. If you are working someone that you have called and they have sent you their exchange, you would then say: His call, your #, your name, your s/p/c, and then your callsign at the end. Your callsign at the end indicates that is the last part of the exchange for that QSO and that you are now inheriting the frequency for someone to call you. As you go along doing so becomes more automatic.
The top High-Power score was KW8N with both the most QSOs and most multipliers. V31XX with the 2nd highest QSO total took 2nd place. Due to having a higher multiplier, Mitch K7RL was able take 3rd place just sneaking past W9RE who finished 4th, followed very closely by K4ZW, K6LL (who had 3rd highest QSOs), WD6T, AE6Y, N1LN and K7SS.
The top Low Power category was comfortably won by K0EU. Ken actually had the 2nd highest multiplier total regardless of class. N4OO grabbed 2nd place and K7SV finished in 3rd. WQ5L finished 4th and also had the largest Golden Log with 162 perfectly logged QSOs! This allowed him to edge out 5th place K0UK by just nine points, or 1/5th of a QSO. N8VW returned to the SSB Sprint for a nifty 6th place finish followed by KP2RUM, K6GHA, W0ETT and KD2KW.
Only three QRP entries this time with WC7S putting WY on the air for the top QRP score. K6UFO operating from NY this time and W7LG were the next two.
We mentioned Ray’s WQ5L 162 QSO Golden Log. Check the Golden Log list and you will also see K6DAV with 88 QSOs and WO4O with 84 QSOs. Actually prior to this, starting in Feb 2015, we have had 44 Golden Logs with 100 or more QSOs. We have had 17 Golden Logs with 150 or more QSOs. And we have had 3 Golden Logs with over 200 QSOs. They are KA9FOX with 227 in Oct 2016, N9LQ with 226 in April 2020, and WD0T with 213 in April 2022.
Who has had the most over 150 QSO Golden Logs? WQ5L now has five of those and has had the top Golden log three times. Next is N0HJZ who has done that three times and twice he had the highest Golden Log in the event.
Nine teams registered for the Team Competition. Scores were pretty well separated this time with MRRC and friends taking the top team score. The NCCC Team #1 took the second spot and SECC#1 took 3rd place.
We had four new records!
WQ5L MS Low Power (beating his previous MS Low Power record from April 2021)
KP2RUM KP2 Low Power (beating the old WP2Z record from Sept 2005)
VY2LI PE Low Power (he now has both High Power and Low Power records there)
K6UFO NY QRP (first time we had a QRP entry from NY)
We had no QRM complaints that I am aware of this time. Keeping track of frequencies that have nets or other QSOs helps and also saves you time from even looking at those frequencies once you have identified them. You can already mark down 7185 KHz throughout and 7188 KHz after 0200 UTC as ones to avoid.
We continue to refine our log checking process thanks to Tom NS6T and Tom K5TM who have been performing the log checking, calculations and improving the submission process. Much work goes into this effort. Mark K9GX will be getting back to distributing the door prize shirts and we are slowly catching up. Trophies and plaques are also being caught up thanks to Icom America! Trophies for the top score in each power class and plaques for 2nd and 3rd place in the high and low power categories going back to the April 2016 event through the April 2022 event are now in the process of being made.
There are many other things that go into organizing and running a contest. Would anyone else like to get involved? We can break these into specific smaller focused areas so that no one gets overloaded. For instance, obtaining door prizes from sponsors, mailing of door prizes, corresponding with door prize recipients, generating and then distributing the trophies, plaques and certificates (K5TM has made that more automated). Keeping records for each state/province up to date, sending e-mails to existing and potential participants regarding next events, managing the ssbsprint website, etc. If you would like to participate in any of these, please e-mail manager@ssbsprint.com.
Wondering how your log came out in the checking process? We can send you a copy of your report if you request it by e-mailing manager@ssbsprint.com.
The next SSB Sprint will be on April 23, 2023 UTC. We have decided to keep it consistent and keep the time period as 0000-0359Z. Since SSB Sprint has become a Fall/Spring event our thoughts are that 20 meters should be and should stay open especially now that we are getting some sunspots. We are getting an even earlier start with reminding folks of the event and attempting to make sure all states are heavily represented. You can help this process by submitting your planned activity at https://ssbsprint.com/planned-activity/my-planned-activity, then we will know where to concentrate our remaining effort. See you next time and thank you again for making the NA SSB Sprint event the fastest 4 hours in Radiosport.
Here are the scores.
