November 2019 SSB Sprint
FINAL RESULTS
Good participation and at least usable conditions marked the November 2019 event. Interest in the NA SSB Sprint continues to grow. Many newer contesters are finding this shorter duration contest and the ability to have many folks calling them at the end of a QSO made by answering a CQ from another station exciting and these have become consistent participants in the event. There were plenty of stations on the air, looks like at least 293 different stations got logged at least 3 times. A snafu with the log submittal process kept some from getting their activity sent in to be included in the results.
Overall, conditions were down a bit from March with only 5 stations managing to score over 10,000 points, compared to 19 stations in March. QSOs were down but also multipliers were down. This time two stations managed to work 52 multipliers, one worked 51 and the rest were all under 50. In March nine stations had 53 or more multipliers with the most being 59! Besides conditions part of this is likely due to sandwiching the SSB Sprint in the middle of the Fall contest season. There’s only so much time folks can devote to contesting. But there aren’t many dates to pick from. This Fall’s even will be Nov 1 UTC which might help a little. The Winter/Spring Sprint Events typically have more participation, more multipliers and higher scores.
In the high-power category, final results were similar but for different reasons. Bill KH7XS counts heavily on his extended 20 meter propagation, excellent signals and somewhat “exotic” QTH to pile up QSOs on 20 meters. He had 190 on 20 meters in March, but this time only 135. Even the dominant West Coast stations were lower on 20 meters than usual. Why? Short-skip in the East and Midwest. The E-layers that cause this can make it difficult to “hop into” these areas from father away. At the same time KW8N with 71 and W9RE with 65 capitalized on that propagation and had the 2nd and 3rd highest 20 meter totals. When it was all over, even with a lower multiplier total than many others, Bob KW8N’s 285 total QSOs were enough to take 1st. Mike W9RE moved into 2nd with the 2nd highest QSO total and 51 mults. Bill KH7XS was 3rd. He had the most multipliers, but was 3rd in QSOs this time. Up and coming Levi “Lee” K6JO finished 4th, and also was tied for the most multipliers. He keeps going to ZF and getting more and more experience. Mitch K7RL, who has occasionally won the SSB Sprint, finished 5th as he made the most of operating SO2R making 80 band changes. N5ZO, K9BGL, K6MR, VE5MX and NA8V round out the top ten high-power.
The low-power category was tightly contested between several of the familiar low power contestants. The top five were all within 1,000 points. Larry “Lar” K7SV and Bill AC0W had the most QSOs, but Bill K0UK’s tops in multipliers gave him 1st place low-power. Paul N4OO had both good QSO totals and good mults from GA to take 2nd place. Paul has now finished either 2nd or 3rd in the last four events. K7SV wound up in 3rd and AC0W was 4th. Another familiar call in SSB Sprint was WD9CIR making the jump all the way up to 5th place. Steve has been steadily climbing up the results ladder each time in this event. Another young up and coming contester KG5HVO finished 6th and made getting that AL multiplier easy. He also had the most QSOs with a Golden Log. Dave ND4Y finished 7th and along with N4ZY made KY an easy multiplier. NU4E, NG0C and N4RA (thanks for WV) rounded out the top ten low-power.
We only had two QRP entries this time. Rick K7DLX in Utah got past KD3VN in PA to take the top QRP spot.
Check out the Golden Logs list. That list contains the entries that during our log checking process did not have ANY logging errors. The more QSOs you make the harder it is to be 100% accurate. Well, as mentioned earlier, Bryant KG5HVO made 124 contacts with no log errors! We had some other perfect loggers. KT4Q with 106, AB1EP with 102, WQ5L with 93 and N8FYL with 80. And Mark KB5KYX, the previous top Golden Log, just to prove last time was not a fluke, did it again with his 73 contacts. Congratulations to all with Golden Logs.
While on this subject, there are some common mistakes that some are making in their logs. One is entering the letter “O” as the number “0”. Another is not being sure that each QSO reflects the correct band that QSO was on. Another is related to the entered time of the QSO. A number of folks log on paper during the contest and then enter it in software later, which is absolutely fine. But the actual time of the QSO should be reasonably close to the time that winds up in the log file submitted. This process may require the use of a text editor, which is easier than editing the time on a QSO by QSO basis in the logging software used. Another common one is using a name during the contest than what shows up in each QSO of the log record. If you look at the Cabrillo output, you will see that your name sent is one of the fields. Make sure it matches what you used, and please don’t change names during the contest. We have had a couple of multi-ops (which we don’t have as an official category at this time, maybe at some point) that used the specific operator’s name of who was on the microphone for that QSO. Then turned in a log with a name that was different than all of the operators. We had others that did log the name used, as it changed, but either of those is tough on the log checking software. And for those using logging software that populates the name info based on a previous QSO with that same station, it is confusing. So, if you want to share the operating, go ahead, but please use the same name throughout and then have the log reflect that name that was used.
Wondering how your log came out in the checking process? We can send you a copy of your report if you request it by e-mailing manager@ssbsprint.com.
The Team Competition was down a bit. We had 13 teams compared to 20 teams in March 2019. The MRRC/NCC team finished 1st and the Southeast Sprint Coalition took 2nd place.
We want to especially thank Tom NS6T and more recently Tom K5TM who have been performing the log checking and calculations. Much work goes into this effort. There are many other things that go into organizing and running a contest. And frankly, we have recently had some difficulty keeping up with all aspects. We would welcome any that would like to get involved. We can break these into specific small focused areas so no one gets overloaded. For instance, obtaining door prizes from sponsors, mailing of door prizes, corresponding with door prize recipients, generating and then distributing the trophies, plaques and certificates. Keeping records for each state/province up to date, sending e-mails to existing and potential participants, regarding next events, managing the ssbsprint website, etc. If you would like to participate in any of these, please e-mail manager@ssbsprint.com.
The next SSB Sprint will be on April 05, 2020 UTC. We are getting an earlier start with reminding folks. See you next time and thank you again for making the NA SSB Sprint event the fastest 4 hours in Radiosport.
