March 2025 NA SSB Sprint Final Results
The five weekends in March of 2025 gave us another opportunity to hold the SSB Sprint during a relatively “open” weekend. This resulted in another excellent turnout and some nice conditions.
In the March 2025 event, 228 stations submitted entries. All states were found in the submitted logs and NA8V managed to get all 50 of them! You may have seen Greg wearing his WAS SSB Sprint T-Shirt at the Dayton Hamvention. ND7K worked 48 states. Four others worked 47 and four more worked 46. All 50 were relatively workable. Rhode Island was the state worked the fewest number of times but still managed to be in 19 logs. Alaska was the next rarest with 24 log appearances. Alabama at 40 times, Idaho at 44 and Hawaii at 47 were the other rarer ones.
For North America DX, HH2AA, KP2J, ZF2VE, XE2S, NP2X and VP5E provided nice multipliers.
The most popular category again was Low-Power comprising 60.5% of the entries. High power made up 37.3% of the entries. QRP only had 5 entries this time. Top scores were up a bit from the Fall event, which is typical for Spring events. There were 24 entries with a score of 10,000 or higher this time.
The biggest difference between Spring and Fall events is usually related to 20 meter propagation. The Spring event has more daylight hours, thus usually more usable time for 20 meters. That played out again this time with almost half of the QSOs occurring on 20 meters (46.4%) though not as dramatically as in Spring Sprint 2024 where 50.7% of QSOs were on 20 meters. This time, 40 meters made up 38.4% of the QSOs with 75 meters providing 15.2%. Another factor can be the amount of short-skip available to the Eastern half of North America. There was not as much of this as in other Spring events. Eighteen stations made 90 or more QSOs on 20 meters with K5TR making a whopping 164. K6LL worked 153, KW8N worked 149, WQ5L worked 136 and ND7K worked 127. Fifteen stations made 90 or more QSOs on 40 meters. KW8N had 124, ND7K had 119, AC0W had 107, K7RL had 106 and W0BH had 105. Twenty-four stations had at least 50 QSOs on 75 meters. N1LN, KA9FOX and N3QE had the most with 62 each, WD0T and NU4E each had 61 and K4BAI had 60. As you can see, not nearly the variation in the top QSO totals on 75 meters as compared with the other bands.
We mentioned that NA8V had worked all states. Greg also had the highest multiplier at 60, well above ND7K and KW8N with 56, and AC0W, K5TR and K4ZW with 55.
So, what does all of this mean? Given the dynamic nature of band conditions during the Sprint, it is essential for each participant to pay close attention to how the bands are behaving. Your strategy should be tailored to your own station’s capabilities and your specific location. By doing so, you can optimize your performance and make the most of the opportunities as they arise throughout the event. While you might not want to try SO2R, you still might want to change bands a few times as conditions on each band will change throughout the 4 hours.
Above all remember that the primary goal is to enjoy the experience. Many operators appreciate the friendly exchanges and brief conversations that occur as the frequency is handed off from one station to another. These moments not only facilitate smooth transitions but also foster a sense of camaraderie in the midst of the lively competition and the excitement of the pileup that follows. Participating in the Sprint should be rewarding both in terms of results and personal enjoyment.
In the High Power category KW8N used his high QSO total to take the top spot. Last Fall’s High Power winner K6JO operating this time from ND7K took 2nd place. George K5TR (using the name “Ed”) tried the NA SSB Sprint full time for the first time in a long time and finished 3rd. K4ZW, W0BH, WD0T, WQ5L, K7RL, K6LL and WD6T finished 4th through 10th.
In the Low Power category, after numerous 2nd and 3rd place finishes, AC0W finally made it to the top spot. Bill had both the highest QSO and highest multiplier totals in Low Power. K7SV was close behind to take 2nd place with 6 less QSOs and one less multiplier. N4OO took 3rd place. NT0EE, N0AT, K0UK, AI6O, KH7X, K6ZH and WV4P finished 4th through 10th. The top four in Low Power all scored over 10,000 points.
Rick K7DLX had this session’s top QRP score. WC7S took 2nd place. WQ6X moved back up to 3rd place. W7LG finished in 4th place and KC3NHE placed 5th this time.
As you may remember, Icom has agreed to provide a plaque for the top scoring “Youth” (age 26 and under). K6JO was indeed the top Youth. But, since he is already the winner of the High Power 2nd place plaque, we will award the Youth plaque to the next highest scoring youth, Max N4ML. Max used to provide the AL multiplier, but he has recently moved to CT and now works at ARRL as an Education and Learning Support Specialist.
We had 8 NEW RECORDS and 1 PREVIOUS RECORD from Nov 2024 event that we need to mention .
W0BH – High Power in Kansas (breaking his own record from April 2020)
WQ5L – High Power in Mississippi (breaking the W5VSZ record from September 1991)
NU4E – High Power in South Carlina (breaking the K3DNE record from March 2024)
K4ZW – High Power in Virginia (breaking his own record from November 2023)
VP5E – High Power in Turks & Caicos (breaking the VP5VEP record from September 1991)
KH7X – Low Power in Arizona (breaking the K8IA record from February 2003)
WN0G – Low Power in Iowa (breaking the N0AC record from September 1997)
K7DLX – QRP Power in Utah (breaking his own record from November 2024)
ND0C – QRP Power in Minnesota (breaking his own record from April 2023)
We had 10 pre-registered Teams. The Great Lakes Division team MRRC & Friends took the top spot. The guys in Minnesota and Wisconsin put together a MWA #1 Team that took 2nd place. Right on their heels was the always strong South East Contest Club using the name South East Sprint Coalition to take 3rd place.
Take a look at those Golden Logs! Tim N3QE (using voice synthesized name “Tina”) logged 236 errorless QSOs. WD9CIR did so with 142 QSOs. KM9R did it with 108 QSOs and AG9A did so with 100 QSOs. Wonder what you might have miscopied? You can find out for yourself by going to the ‘Logs’ menu on the website. Simply enter the call sign you used in the SSB Sprint, answer the challenge question, and click the ‘Send My Link’ button. An email will be sent to the email address we have on file for the call sign you enter. In the received email is a link; click on the link to display your log check report. If you encounter a problem, be sure to contact us.
Speaking of logging, this past event had quite a number of logging related issues. There was the typical incorrectly copied information that occurs occasionally in any contest. But there was an unusually high number of times where the station being logged was actually working someone else. That’s easy to happen in the Sprint with all of the frequency hand offs. When that happens, not only do you not get credit for the QSO, you also receive a 1 QSO penalty. What to do? Be more careful and be sure to include both callsigns in the exchange. Even at the end of the QSO, many have chosen to say, “Thanks Joe, your frequency.” That might make “Steve” realize he was not the one that was just worked.
Another logging situation was missing sequential sent numbers in the log. It may have gone from giving out a #121 to giving out a #123 next (skipping #122). That’s not a problem, unless you actually worked someone using that missing number and he has it in his log, but you don’t. Of course you won’t get credit for that QSO anyway, but it means he won’t get credit for the QSO either, plus he will also receive a 1 QSO penalty. I know one way that happened to a few is where logging software was being used that if the operator QSY’d before hitting Enter, the QSO information was erased and the number sent was gone too and it went on to the next number. There are generally ways to configure the logging software so that this “feature” is disabled. This also seemed to occur in logs (sometimes a sequential number was skipped, sometimes not) where the operator changed bands or had a long period between contacts. The time in Station A’s log would fit the time period and exchanged information entered in Station B’s log that would have been the correct info had Station A put it in his log. Then again, it could be Station B did not wait to be sure that Station A got his information completely and moved on to the next QSO. So, Station A did not enter that QSO info, since to him it was an incomplete QSO. Some of us may also be causing some of this by (in the interest of winning the jump ball) quickly starting to call the station obtaining the frequency before that acknowledgement is completed.
We have been doing better with this, so just another reminder. Please make notes of what frequencies nets are operating on and avoid QSYing to those frequencies. The most often affected is the OMISS net on 7185 KHz.
Once again, we want to thank our main sponsors Icom America and Giga Parts. In addition to the plaques and trophies provided by Icom, many of you have now received a SSB Sprint T-Shirt from Icom or a discount credit code from Giga Parts. Remember, you just need a score of 1,500 or more to be in the door prize drawing. We will be drawing our 30 winners from this event soon and those winners will be notified.
The next SSB Sprint is fast approaching. It will be on November 23, 2025, 0000-0359z, which locally is Saturday evening November 22nd. We keep attempting to make sure all states and provinces are reasonably represented. You can help achieve this by submitting your planned activity at https://ssbsprint.com/planned-activity/my-planned-activity.
Looking ahead to 2026, the “Spring” version of the NA SSB Sprint will be held on February 1, which locally will be Saturday evening January 31. That was the same date used back in 2015 when the current NA SSB Sprint Contest sponsorship team recovered the discarded NA SSB Sprint from the NCJ and sponsored its first event under their leadership. The result that year was phenomenal. 367 validated entries were submitted. That remains the record for any Sprint on any mode. The NA SSB Sprint has continued to have the highest participation of all Sprint events.
See you next time and thank you again for making the NA SSB Sprint event the fastest 4 hours in Radiosport.
